Getting Ready



Hello Everybody,
We are heading out on another adventure to Ireland, London and Paris.  We leave Toronto on Monday September 30 and arrive in Dublin on October 1.  We'll be in Dublin for five nights and then take a train to Galway where we will also be staying for five nights.  We head to London on October 11, where we will be staying at a new Airbnb in Shoreditch (the East End where we have stayed on our last two trips to London).  On October 17, we go to Paris on the Eurostar (our first trip through the Chunnel).  We return to Toronto on October 24.

Dublin
We have never been to Ireland before, so this will be a new adventure.  We may do some day trips and welcome suggestions from folks who have been to these two cities.  We'll be doing walking tours in both cities and plan a literary pub crawl in Dublin.

For those of you that have been following our travel blogs, you will know that Allan often takes a new name.   He is very enamoured with his Gaelic name which is Ailín meaning "rock" or "noble".  So it looks like he will take on three names on the trip.  Ailín in Ireland, Allan in London and his usual Alain in Paris.

I expect our first post from Dublin will be Wednesday October 2, internet permitting.

We hope that you will join us on our journey.  Feel free to contact us with travel tips or just to say hello!!  We have already voted and will be following the election, along with everyone else.

Monday October 21 turned out to be a mainly sunny day with a high of about 16C.  Very nice change. We stopped for a coffee at Le Boot, a tiny place in the Marais.  Paris has only started serving good coffee over the past few years.  This place was using beans from Oslo. Le Boot Alain with his macchiato We wandered around the Marais a bit more, although a number of stores were closed on Monday. Hello handsome! We stopped at Maison Labiche, a store that does embroidery on T-shirts, sweaters, coats etc. in a unique handwriting.  I got a red-striped T-shirt that says "Moi, non plus."   They also do custom embroidery. Final day in Paris

Wednesday October 23 was a mix of sun and cloud with about 10 minutes of rain.  It was a bit warmer with a high of 16C. Blogger with morning coffee prepared by Alain with the Nanopresso-- great crema We are staying at 12 Rue des Tournelles and the Synagogue des Tournelles is located at 21bis Rue des Tournelles about 1/2 block north on the other side of the street. Walking by the first few days of our visit, we hadn't really noticed that it was a synagogue as at street level, there are no signs and it is a very narrow street.  However, one evening we noticed two heavily armed guards on our side of the street and people coming out of the building celebrating Sukkot. We learned from Google that the Synagogue (opened in 1876) was constructed in a Roman-Byzantine style by Marcellin Varcollier, a student of Balatard (the architect of the Pavillions des Halles).  It has two Torah scrolls on the top of the building over a beautiful rose window.   We learned that in...

Arriving in Dublin and visit to EPIC (The Irish Emigration Museum)

Greetings from Dublin!  Our 11:05 p.m. flight left Toronto about 20 minutes late on Monday September 30 and we had to circle the Dublin airport for an extra 40 minutes on Tuesday morning.  We landed at around 11:30 a.m. in pouring rain with a temperature of about 11C.  The Dublin airport is a real throwback with peeling paint and tired wood panelling.  Definitely in need of an update. We took the Airlink bus (7 euros each) to a stop near our Airbnb.   We are staying near the Docklands area, north of the River Liffey.  We were too early to check in, so we left our luggage at an internet café and headed down the street to visit EPIC: The Irish Emigration Museum , which had been highly recommended by some friends from Montreal who had visited just a few weeks ago.  EPIC stands for  Every Person is Connected .
